Spanish NIE Number (Numero de Identificación de Extranjeros)

Identification Number for Foreigners. Now issued as CRC (Certificado de Registro Ciudadano de la Unión) [Como Residente Comunitario] Registration Certificate, for an EU citizen.

What is an NIE Number?

An NIE is a number the Spanish authorities issue to identify foreigners. It is roughly equivalent to the DNI Number each Spanish subject is given for national identification purposes.

Why do I need an NIE Number?

You will require a Spanish NIE Number, or as it is now referred to as a foreign registration certificate if you are going to live and/or work in Spain. This is now obligatory and a pre-requisite for the following actions performed in Spain

•  Buying a property
•  Open a Bank account
•  Apply for a driving license and to validate your current EU driving license
•  Apply for a business permit
•  Apply for a mortgage or other type of loan.
•  Pay your taxes
•  Contract Utilities; Telephone (inc. mobiles), electric, water, gas etc
•  To make purchases above Euros €3,000
•  Employment contracts

I am already a Resident in Spain, are there any changes that affect me?

A most important new law amends the existing identity card, known as Tarjeta de Regimen Comunitario. All EU citizens who live in Spain should obtain a new Residence Certificate when their current document expires or immediately if they intend to seek work. This is the only document you will need as proof that you are resident in Spain. The latest information we have is that the Tarjeta de Regimen Comunitario will be replaced on expiry with the CRC (NIE).

As with a new Passport application in the UK the law in Spain requires applicants for a Spanish NIE Number to apply in person. You can apply at the Comisaría in Málaga City. The process can take a few hours and you will leave with your NIE certificate in your hand! (No need to wait weeks and return visit). Please note: Appointments are mornings only.
